Plan a gallery wall before making a single hole
Paper templates make it easier to balance a collection, check frame sizes and choose the right hanging method.

Measure the outside of every frame
The print size is not the outside frame size. Record width, height, depth and weight, including glass and backing. Arrange the actual frames on the floor first. Choose a relationship that holds the group together: a shared finish, similar artwork colors, or a repeated gap.
Test the complete group on the wall
Cut paper to each outside frame dimension. Use a removable tape suitable for your wall finish and test it inconspicuously. Position the group relative to the furniture beneath it, then step back to the room’s normal viewing position. Photographing the templates can help you compare layouts, but check the arrangement with your eyes too.
Match the hanging method to the object
Use the frame maker’s hardware instructions and fixings intended for the wall construction. Adhesive strips are not a universal replacement for mechanical fixings. Read the exact strip package for supported surfaces, load, frame dimensions, preparation and waiting time. Mirrors, valuable pieces and locations above beds need particular care and may be unsuitable.
Mark the fixing, not just the outline
A hanging wire, sawtooth or pair of hooks can place the fixing away from the top edge. Measure that offset and transfer it to the template. Check for services before drilling, and get qualified help if the wall construction or hidden wiring is uncertain. Keep templates until the last frame is level so that adjustments stay organized.
