An entryway reset, one useful layer at a time

Make arriving home easier with a place for keys, a clear walking route and just enough visual interest.

Start with the things that arrive

List what actually lands by the door: keys, shoes, bags and mail. Give each category a destination. A small bowl handles keys; a shelf or basket can separate incoming paper from items ready to leave. Avoid buying a console until you know which of these jobs it must do.

Keep the door and passage clear

Measure with the door fully open. Include handles, skirting boards and any radiator that reduces usable depth. A beautiful table is a poor fit if its corners obstruct the route. In a very narrow hall, one wall-mounted element may work better than freestanding furniture, provided the wall and fixings are suitable.

Use a mirror deliberately

Test what the mirror will reflect from both standing and seated positions. A view of a window or artwork may be more pleasant than a view of a utility cupboard. Trace its outside size on paper and position the template before mounting. Follow the supplied mounting instructions and choose fixings suited to the wall and load.

Edit the last layer

Add a single photograph or small object you enjoy seeing when you arrive. Repeat a material already in the room rather than introducing three new finishes. Live with the arrangement for a few days, then remove anything that competes with the keys, bag or mail. The best final purchase may be no purchase at all.
