Measure for storage baskets before you buy
A basket only works when it fits both the shelf and the things you need to put inside it. Measure both.

Measure the opening in three directions
Record the narrowest usable width, depth and height. Check for hinges, shelf lips and brackets that reduce the opening. Do not assume two compartments in the same unit are identical. Leave clearance for handles and for fingers to grip the basket.
Check inside and outside dimensions
Outside dimensions determine whether the basket fits the shelf. Inside dimensions determine whether your objects fit the basket. Tapered sides, rounded corners and thick woven material reduce the usable interior. If only one dimension set is provided, ask the seller or choose a product with clearer measurements.
Choose by the contents
Light scarves need a different container from loose stationery or wet toiletries. Small items can catch in open weaves. Heavy contents need handles and a base designed for that use. Natural woven material may vary in finish and dimensions; check the seller’s stated tolerances and care instructions.
Test the retrieval movement
Make a simple cardboard footprint or use an existing container of similar size. Try lifting it out with the shelf above in place. A theoretically perfect fit can still be frustrating if the basket cannot tilt or slide freely. Avoid forcing a woven basket into an undersized opening; it needs to be easy to use.
