A garden hedge is very useful in many ways. But what is it, specifically, a hedge? It is about a structure that extends vertically, made in an artificial way. So here is that it always needs human intervention to be able to keep. However, it should be considered that inside it can have an ecosystem that could give your garden an extra value.

Artificially created by man, the hedge is often already inserted in the garden of the houses. Inside, however, presents a great biodiversity because the plants in the hedge receive light from different directions and, in addition, they sprout from all sides.

Those who are beginners often find themselves having to spend a long time behind hedges with little success. This happens because, first of all, he doesn’t know which plant to choose. Also because each plant has its own evolution which, if you have no experience, does not allow you to make accurate predictions.

In general, the plants that make up a hedge are planted by specialized companies. They are the ones who propose the type of plant to the owner of the garden. Usually, however, the varieties that stand out among the proposals are few and standardized. On the contrary, it happens if, instead, you have the time and money to contact a garden designer.

After all, only logic can really guide you in choosing the right plants that will make up your hedge. In this case, in fact, purely aesthetic considerations should be put aside.

The best months to be able to think about transplanting a hedge are September and October. Before choosing the plants, however, it will be necessary to ask about the function that the hedge will have to perform:

  • shielding
  • decorative,
  • formal,
  • windbreak
  • natural,
  • delimitation.

Generally, hedges have the main purpose of optically dividing your garden with the outside or, why not, with the space of the neighbors. For many gardeners and garden owners, hedges are considered to be diamonds due to their (possible) longevity. A longevity that will only be possible if maintenance is careful and delicate.

The most common plants for the hedge

To choose the plants that will make up your hedge, it will be necessary to consider three elements. The first is the height of the hedge.

The second oneinstead it is related to the permanence of the leaves. If you choose evergreen plants you will have a garden with more solid lines and will guarantee you greater privacy. In addition, it will protect you better from the wind. If you don’t like the flowers they can always be removed.

The third and final elementinstead it concerns the choice of species: monospecies or mixed? In the first case, these are plants planted regularly, in a block that becomes single and solid. The mixed hedge is lower maintenance and can usually become a home for birds.

Among the most commonly used plants to create a hedge stand out:

  • viburnum, which is easily cultivated and grows dense and regular
  • cypress, which resists the cold, needs little care and gets up a lot, even in a short time
  • laurel, which in addition to being very compact, gives yellow blooms
  • cherry laurel, which is used to create hedges at even very low temperatures; it blooms in spring and is easy to grow
  • photinia, which is evergreen and reaches even 5 meters
  • Japanese oval privet, which is perfect when placed in the sun in mild climates; the small flowers that bloom in summer are very decorative.

In order for the hedge to be well compacted, it is necessary to use plants that belong to the same genus. This choice is also made for aesthetic purposes. If your goal is to alternate colors, you can alternate a couple of species or use some with an uneven seasonal cycle.
